"Love Comes More Naturally to the Human Heart"

"No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin or his background or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite."

Those are words from Nelson Mandela's 1994 autobiography, "Long Walk to Freedom," as retweeted by President Obama in the wake of the genuinely heinous hate crime in Charlottesville over the weekend.  Although everyone who reads this blog is undoubtedly feeling the same heartache and apprehension that I am, sadly that isn't the sentiment everywhere in this great country.  However, we continue to choose love and kindness for all living creatures in our house.  Just the other day, Everleigh called Jakob her best friend, and my heart melted.  When we were in Boston, I marveled at the way the kids interacted with other children that they didn't know, and how quick they were to form friendships over shared interests.  At Echo on Monday morning, both children were so excited to have butterflies land on them, and they were equally enthusiastic to let the volunteers in the exhibit gently remove them so none of them got hurt.  We can't shield our innocent babies forever, but I continue to have faith that by teaching them to be quick to love others, that they will make the right choices as they grow and stand steadfast against hate.
